The Outdoor Writers Association of California selected the newly remodeled Inn at Morro Bay for its spring conference.

Its board of directors meeting, a presentation by former Harbor Director Rick Algert, and an awards program for best piece honoring last spring’s host community are scheduled.

Plus a slew of outdoor activities have been arranged by the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce. Some members might witness Morro Bay’s biggest tourism event, the 16th Cruisin’ Morro Bay Car Show, May 3-6, when 500 classics cruise, shine and show.

Tom Wilmer, 25-year veteran travel journalist and KCBX-KSBX host of Audiolog, proudly calls Morro Bay home. He joined the writers association in 2005 to network with California’s best outdoor journalists.

“Our members have a shared interest and passion for active experiences — quiet experiences like hiking or kayaking or active adventures like ocean fishing and hunting,” he said.

“Morro Bay is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. I travel worldwide, and Morro Bay has it all. We’re a rare coastal environment — a marine sanctuary and world-class maritime community,” he added. “When I wrote ‘Romancing the Coast,’ I discovered the Inn at Morro Bay was unique, the only true bay-front inn on the West Coast.”

There is a great opportunity to connect your local community to “The Hunger Games,” the blockbuster movie that had the third-largest box office opening in history over the weekend.

The NWTF, a national non-profit conservation organization that teaches archery classes for youth and women in your area, has information and sources that can generate stories that tie in with the movie.

Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of The Hunger Games, survives in the post-apocalyptic movie thanks in part to her archery training. Fortunately, learning to shoot a bow like Katniss is well within the reach of most people.

The NWTF introduces youth and women to archery and the outdoors through its JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) and Women in the Outdoors outreach programs. Archery training is one of the most popular activities at JAKES and Women in the Outdoors events nationwide.

Here are a few facts about archery at NWTF outreach programs:

The NWTF hosts about 1,000 JAKES events annually, the vast majority including archery training, throughout the United States and Canada.

Girls make up roughly 50 percent of all JAKES events participants.

More than 4,000 Women in the Outdoors events, the vast majority including archery training, have been held by the NWTF.

Professional archery instructors and quality equipment are provided at all JAKES and Women in the Outdoors events.

For local contact information about these programs and instructors in your area, contact John Brasier at jbrasier@nwtf.net or (800) THE-NWTF.

New York Mills, Minn. - One can only imagine what the Canadian fur trade of the 1600’s could have been if Gussy were there moving pelts and making money in a Lund Alaskan. Hudson’s Bay Fur Company would have been named “Gussy’s Goods” and his likeness still minted on the Canadian one dollar bill.

In reality, Lund Pro Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson is a frontiersman guide who tasks his Alaskan with everything from ferrying trophy bucks upstream to deer camp to holding steady over a school of walleyes in rough waters. The Alaskan, and Gussy, are simply that multitalented. (PS. Gussy’s versatility also has him flinging Rapalas for bass from a Lund Predator on the FLW Tour.)

So sit back and let the trapper and Lund rapper tell you the tale of the Lund Alaskan.
