Bill Becher paralyzed in 30-foot fall
On Friday, December 16, according to Bernadette Regan, Joshua Tree Climbing Ranger, OWAC Member, Bill Becher was climbing Saddle Rock Mountain, a 600-foot formation in Joshua Tree National Park, when he fell 30 feet and landed on his lower back. He was transported to Desert Regional Hospital where he has been undergoing physical therapy.
He sounds upbeat and very positive according to Jack Holder, OWAC's Goodwill Ambassador.
"I'm just having to adjust to this, the wheelchair and everything," Bill commented. "My health is fine, I'm in no further danger and my mental condition is good," he added.
"It is best to communicate with me through the Yahoo email, billbecher@yahoo.com, since we are staying very busy."
Bill was named California Outdoor Writer of the Year in 2004, is an expert outdoorsman and is highly trained, skilled and traveled as a mountaineer, ice climber, scuba diver and mountain biker. Over the past 15 years, he has established himself as one of America’s best outdoors writers and photographers, capturing his experiences and communicating them with a quality and style that has gained him millions of readers from his base in Southern California, according to Tom Stienstra, fellow OWAC member, San Franchisco Chronicle's outdoor columnist and two-time National Outdoor Writer of the Year.
