Lake Davis Trout Restock Celebration
Thousands of large Eagle Lake rainbow trout will be planted into Lake Davis near Portola during the “Lake Davis Trout Restocking Celebration,” Friday and Saturday, May 16-17, 2008.
The two-day event, hosted by California Department of Fish and Game and Plumas National Forest, is part of the plan to return Lake Davis to its status as a world-class trout fishery. During 2008, nearly a million fish will be planted into the reservoir. This follows DFG’s pike eradication treatment of the reservoir last September.
The “media event” on Friday will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the hatchery trucks lining up across the dam and trout being released at noon. Thousands of catchable and subcatchable fish will be planted. In addition, 3,000 trophy trout ranging from 6 to 10-plus pounds will be released. Ten-dollar reward tagged fish that DFG will use to determine the catch rate will also be deposited into the lake.
Representatives from DFG and U.S. Forest Service, along with City of Portola and Plumas County officials, will make short presentations and be available for interviews.
Saturday’s event, geared to fishermen and the public, will start at 10:30 a.m. at Coot Bay along Lake Davis’s east shore. A free fishing clinic, informational booths, and children’s activities with Smokey the Bear will be part of the fun. It’s also expected there will be lots of fishing going on. Don’t miss your opportunity to catch a big one! For more information, call (530) 832-4754.
