OWAC News

July, 2007

  President's Message

Yvonne and I had the opportunity to drive over to La Vegas last week to attend the 50t h Icast Tackle Manufacturers Show put on by one of our Supporting Members, American Sportfishing Association.  It was obvious that our membership is on the move this summer as OWAC was well represented at the show by both supporting and regular members.

We talked with Ed Zieralski who had flown in for the day. He had just recently returned from a thirty-four day excursion back east checking out a multitude of golf courses and taking time out to try his luck at freshwater flyfishing on some of the pristine eastern rivers.

            Carrie Wilson
and her husband just returned from an exciting vacation to Washington and Canada, including spending a remarkable Canada Day(July 1st) in Victoria, where they enjoyed the fireworks and celebration. We spoke with Paul Lebowitz as he methodically hurried up and down the 24 aisles containing the reported 1400 exhibitors (we didn’t have time to count) in the huge convention hall.

OWAC supporting members were well represented including: American Sportfishing Association, B.A.S.S./ESPN Outdoors, Baja on the Fly, Emmrod, Hobie Cat, International Sportsmen's Expositions, MacDaddy's Fishing Lures, and Pure Fishing. There may have been others in attendance and I apologize if I overlooked anyone.

This morning, Tuesday, July 17, 2007, Yvonne and I are headed back to
Pismo Beach in our recently acquired self contained Roadtrek, to vacation with some of our family, a direct result of OWAC’s 2006 Spring Conference.

We are still hard at work on the Conferences sites for 2008.  Any suggestions are welcome. Please send them to Craig Hanson or Zack.

Hope you are having a great summer!

Executive Director's Update

Calaveras Conference News

Believe it or not, you should have a registration packet in your mailbox by late this week or early next week for the Fall Conference in Calaveras. Anna Davies and Lisa Reynolds, who are coordinating things from the Calaveras end, say materials will be in the mail on July 17 or 18.

There will be a little more emphasis on craft improvement than at previous conferences, with two fifty-minute sessions and a choice of two topics in each session. In other words, there will be four individual sessions, of which each member can choose two. They should be relatively small, seminar-style discussions. Alternative activities for guests and spouses will be offered at the same time.

That's certainly not to say that the conference shouldn't be a lot of fun too. Monday activities include horseback riding, kayaking, mountain biking, scenic touring, caving, golf and of course fly and conventional fishing. Sunday activities will take place at Ironstone Vineyards, as will Sunday dinner, preceded by a tour with food and wine pairing.

Calaveras is also offering several exciting pre- and post-conference activities, all of which are complementary. Among them are competitive (not really) grape stomping on Saturday at the Gold Rush Street Faire and Grape Stomp, golf and lunch on Tuesday at the Greenhorn Creek Resort and an outdoor concert Friday night featuring George Thorogood and Bryan Adams.

Then there's the Camanche Cast 'n' Blast, a two-day extravaganza of shooting clays, fishing and duck and pheasant hunting, all hosted by the California Parks Companies. This outing was announced in the May OWAC News, and coordinator John Poimiroo recently said that only seven of the 15 reserved rooms remain. RV camping is available too. Email John at john@poimiroo.comif you're interested
