California Waterfowl Season

Wilderness Unlimited (W.U.), California and Oregon’s largest private waterfowl habitat and hunting operator, has over 35 duck and goose clubs available for its members in the key waterfowl hunting areas in California. On Saturday, October 20 the “balance of the state zone” will open essentially giving W.U. California members access to waterfowl hunting throughout the state. Starting back with the Northeastern opener on October 6 and running through January 27, 2008, W.U. will be hunting waterfowl somewhere in California. The serious waterfowler can follow the birds if he/she chooses.

And if that is not enough, Wilderness Unlimited also manages for its members several waterfowl properties in the state of Oregon. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife adopted the "liberal" season guidelines allowing for a 107 day season with larger bag limits. Thus, a W.U. member can hunt from the Columbia River to the Mexican border.

Historically, W.U. has concentrated its California holdings in the Colusa, Los Banos and El Centro areas. Facilities are also in the Fall River, high desert and Delta areas. W.U. is always looking to add on new facilities.

The biggest news this year is W.U.’s three newest acquisitions.

Drumheller Club - This property, formally known as the Sprig Club, combined with W.U.’s surrounding parcels, totals an approximate 1800 acre block along the Colusa Gridley Highway, 15 miles north of Colusa on the east side of the Sacramento River. As the crow flies this area is situated in the middle of four major refuges. The large tract of ground will be managed as four different units with a 100-acre+ refuge (no hunt zone) in the midst.

Webfoot Goose Club – This well known property lies across Interstate 5 from the Sacramento Wildlife Rufuge, south of Willows. This club sits in a well-documented productive goose hunting area. Drivers on I-5 are often treated to views large goose grinds numbering thousands of birds. The property has more than doubled in size from 300 acres to over 800 acres.

Sunset Ranch Duck Club – This could be the biggest news in southland waterfowl hunting this year. Sunset Ranch, a major tourist destination south of the town of Mecca on the north end of the Salton Sea, has entered into a management agreement with W.U. The area has had historically good duck shooting.
