Southern California Water Festival

On May 1st and 2nd, 2007, OWAC Supporting Member California Waterfowl Association (CWA) will interact with an estimated 800 fourth and fifth graders at the Children’s Water Festival in Irvine. The festival is put on by the Orange County Water District Groundwater Guardian Team. It is the largest event of its kind in the nation, with between 4,000 and 5,000 student participants.
CWA is an official sponsor of the event, where students have the opportunity to experience a variety of exhibits and activities, all of which are focused on the value of California’s water.
CWA will facilitate “Migration Madness,” an activity in which students “become” waterfowl and must “migrate” between nesting and wintering habitat. As habitat disappears due to human encroachment, some waterfowl can no longer migrate successfully. The game is reminiscent of the popular party game “musical chairs,” and will be followed with a brief discussion of the value of wetland habitat for waterfowl in California.
